The trail up to the top of Mount Galunggung consists of many stone steps. The steps are uneven, and the incline is steep (vertical ascent of 130-150 m / 420 – 500 ft), so you will likely need a few rests before you reach the top. However, overall, the trek is accessible to most people and easy for amateur hikers. 

At the main entrance gate to Galunggung, the road divides into two. Each road leads to its own parking lot and then to a set of stairs leading to the crater lake. The one on the left consists of about 500 steps and is a bit steeper. The one on the right consists of about 600 steps and is slightly less steep. The second set of stairs can be recognised by signposts calling them the “yellow stairs”. 

Both options will grace you with views of black volcanic sand, lush rolling hills, forest, and valleys, as well as monkeys along the way. 

From the top one can enjoy taking in views of the turquoise crater lake, distant green peaks, and the lush green vegetation surrounding the top. There is also a waterfall and a hot spring within the general area of the crater lake.

Galunggun has a tropical Savanna climate. The best time of year to visit is between mid-June and mid-September. At this time of year, the temperatures are more comfortable, it is the least humid, with the least rain and fewest clouds. Within this period, August is the most ideal month to visit. 

The hottest period of the year is from mid-December to late April. During this period the average daily high temperature is above 30°C (86°F). 

The cooler period of the year is from late June to early September. The average daily high temperature is below 29°C (84°F) in this period. 

This region has a heavy wet season with a lot of rainfall between mid-October and mid-May. The month with the most rainfall is December, with an average of 22.5 wet days.

The trailhead is located just outside of the large town of Tasikmalaya. Supplies can be bought from here before embarking on the short trek to the top of the mountain. 

There are stalls located at the top, which sell food, drink, clothing, and other curios, though they are not always open. 

The stairs up to the crater lake have been well-maintained and have railings on either side.

Mount Galunggun, is situated in the village of Linggariati, West Java, Indonesia. It is 5-6 hours’ drive from Jakarta. The closest town is called Tasikmalaya and is about 23 km (14 mi) away.

It is not difficult to get to Galunggun. There are buses and trains available from Jakarta to Tasikmalaya. You can catch a minibus or motorcycle to either of the two car parks from Tasikmalaya where you’ll find the base of the stairways leading up the mountain.
