There are multiple trail options to climb Mount Jerai. 

One is the Merbok trail which usually starts at Lembah Bujang Archaeological site and takes about 9-10 hours in total.

Another trail option is the Sungai Bujang trail which starts near Tupah Water Treatment Plant, and takes roughly the same amount of time as the Merbok trail – quicker if you are fit. 

A third trail option is the Yan route which starts on the opposite side of the mountain and passes through Tangga Kenari Titi Hayun. 

There is also a 12 km (7.5 mi) road that leads all the way to the top. It takes about 30 minutes by car to get to the top using this route, but the road isn’t always in the best condition to drive up.

There are multiple trail options to climb Mount Jerai, all with similar terrain but sometimes varying difficulty. The trek up has some challenging sections but is generally manageable for hikers of varying skill levels.

The general terrain for most of the trail options consists of one or two river crossings, sparse forest, rocky, uneven paths, low-lying green grass and vegetation, with a few steep sections. 

The trail starting at Lembah Bujang Archaeological site also has a bridge, some steep stone steps, a waterfall, another steep section with makeshift steps made from rocks, and a waterfall (Alur Naga Waterfall).

At the top, you’ll be treated to a great view of the Kedah plains and surrounds. 

Access to the actual summit is prohibited as it is the site of a telecommunications tower.

The winding road leading to the top is tarred but steep, unmaintained and dangerous at times.

Mount Jerai is situated in an area with a tropical climate. it is generally warm and humid throughout the year. However, there are distinct wet and dry seasons. 

On average, daytime temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F), while nighttime temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). However, temperatures can feel higher due to the high humidity levels common in tropical regions.

The best time to visit Mount Jerai for outdoor activities is during the dry season, which typically occurs from December to March. During this period rainfall is minimal, and the weather is more predictable. 

The wet season in the Mount Jerai area usually spans from April to November. This period experiences higher levels of rainfall, with occasional thunderstorms and monsoon rains. It would be best to avoid climbing in this period.

For a hike up Mount Jerai, you’ll need sturdy hiking boots with good traction, plenty of water to stay hydrated, snacks to maintain energy levels, insect repellent, and a lightweight and waterproof jacket in case of unexpected rain.

If you are spending the night on the mountain you may also want to pack extra layers of clothing, and a torch or headlamp.

There is a food court at the top of the mountain, as well as a resort called The Regency Jerai Hill Resort, and a museum. You’ll need to take sufficient water with you for the hike up. 

Camping facilities are also available if desired.

There is water available in streams on the lower slopes and for sale from some stalls on the Sungai Bujang trail from about 290 m (950 ft) above sea level.

A guide is not necessary as the path is well-worn and it is not difficult to make your way. Porters are also unnecessary since this is only a one-day trek.

Mount Jerai is located in the Malaysian state of Kedah, near the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, roughly 60 km (37 mi) southwest of Alor Setar, the capital city of Kedah.

The nearest major international airport is Penang International Airport. From here, you can rent a car, catch a train or arrange for private transportation to get to Mount Jerai. The closest train station is Gurun, about 30 minutes away from the top of the mountain by car. 

Alternatively, one could also take a domestic flight to Sultan Abdul Halim Airport (AOR) in Alor Setar, which is a smaller airport closer to Mount Jerai compared to Penang International Airport. From there, you can continue by car, or catch a train and then organise private transport for the remaining distance.

There isn’t a high risk for injury up this mountain, but it is still better not to hike up alone as it is a full day hike and both the road and the trail can become tricky and slippery after rain.
